Hi, I’m Erin, founder of The Dermal Lounge Skin & Laser.
If you’ve landed on this blog, you’re probably wondering what a dermal therapist actually is
— and, more importantly, what can I actually help you with?
So, let’s start from the beginning.
So, what exactly is a dermal therapist?
I started studying my Graduate Diploma in Cosmetic Dermal Science back in 2018. It took
me four years to complete, and those four years gave me a pretty deep dive into the skin —
not just what it looks like, but how it actually functions.
I studied everything from skin anatomy and physiology, including how skin cells function
and respond, through to laser physics, where we learn how light interacts with tissue and
chromophores.
I also studied dermatological procedures, skin conditions, cosmetic chemistry, wound
healing, inflammation and the biological processes that influence how skin responds to
different treatments.
These are the fundamentals of dermal science, but there is so much more to it.
We learn the skin cell from the inside out — how it communicates, how it responds to
inflammation and injury, how different ingredients and treatment modalities interact with it,
and most importantly, how we can influence those processes to help the skin function more
effectively.
And this is where my approach started to evolve.
Then I discovered Corneotherapy
After completing my dermal degree, I wanted to further educate myself in a completely
different approach to skin.
I wanted to understand what we could achieve without relying on devices or aggressive
active ingredients, and instead focus on the skin barrier itself.
That led me to Corneotherapy.
Corneotherapy gave me another way of looking at skin — particularly skin that is
compromised, inflamed or simply not tolerating traditional treatment approaches.Rather than immediately reaching for stronger actives, peels or devices, Corneotherapy
focuses on understanding and supporting the stratum corneum — the outermost layer of
the skin — and restoring its function.
The concept is closely associated with the work of dermatologist Dr Albert Kligman and the
idea of working outside-in: supporting the skin barrier so that healthier skin function can
follow.
This approach has become particularly valuable when working with compromised skin and
clients who may not be suitable for aggressive treatments.
It has also broadened the way I think about conditions such as eczema, psoriasis and other
complex or compromised skin presentations, including working alongside clients who may be
undergoing oncology treatment or managing autoimmune conditions.
And this is important:
Not every skin needs more. Sometimes it needs less.
So, what do I actually do at The Dermal Lounge?
I combine advanced laser treatments, evidence-informed skincare and
corneotherapeutic principles to create a treatment approach that is specific to the person
sitting in front of me.
My philosophy is simple:
Progressive treatments over aggressive treatments.
I don’t believe in treating skin just because we can.
I believe in understanding why the skin is behaving the way it is, what it can tolerate, and
what treatment is going to move us towards the goal without unnecessarily compromising the
skin barrier.
This is also why I don’t believe in cookie-cutter treatment packages.
Your skin gets a treatment plan. Not a template.
Every client who comes into The Dermal Lounge is assessed based on their skin, concerns,
history, lifestyle and what their skin is presenting with at that particular point in time.
From there, I develop a curated treatment plan.
And here’s the important part — the plan can change.
Skin isn’t static.Your tolerance can change. Your environment can change. Your hormones, medications,
lifestyle, stress, previous treatments and even the season can influence how your skin
behaves.
So we reassess as we go.
Because, once again:
One size does not fit all when it comes to skin.
Sometimes the best treatment is a referral
I also believe strongly in knowing when something is outside my scope.
I work alongside other practitioners and will refer when I believe you would benefit from
something I don’t offer — whether that’s a particular device, prescription medication, oral
medication, naturopathic support or another specialised treatment.
I don’t need to do everything.
I need to make sure you are getting the right care.
Sometimes that means keeping your treatment in-house.
Sometimes it means working alongside another practitioner.
And sometimes it means referring you elsewhere.
Your skin comes first.
What do I actually have at The Dermal Lounge?
Professional skincare
My primary skincare range is Circadia, a science-focused professional skincare brand
founded by Dr Peter Pugliese.
What I love about Circadia isn’t simply the products themselves — although some of the
creams really are witchcraft.
It’s the education.
The ongoing education and understanding of the science behind the products allows me to
adjust treatments and homecare rather than simply following a rigid protocol.
I can mix, match and modify depending on what your skin actually needs.
Because, you guessed it…ONE SIZE DOESN’T FIT ALL.
Advanced laser technology
I also work with professional laser systems from Lumenis and Leonidas, allowing me to
treat a broad range of concerns using different wavelengths and treatment modalities.
This includes treatments targeting:
Pigmentation, Melasma, Vascular concerns, Unwanted hair, Skin rejuvenation, Skin texture,
Tattoo pigmentation.
And other complex skin concerns
The technology is only one part of the equation, though.
Knowing when to use it, when not to use it, and how to combine it with skin health
principles is where the real treatment planning comes in.
So, what makes The Dermal Lounge different?
For me, it’s not about having the biggest treatment menu or throwing every machine at your
skin.
It’s about understanding the skin in front of me.
Sometimes that means laser.
Sometimes it’s a corrective treatment.
Sometimes it’s rebuilding the barrier.
Sometimes it’s changing your homecare.
And sometimes it’s doing absolutely nothing aggressive for a while.
There is no magic machine, magic cream or 10-step treatment that works for everyone.
There is your skin, your goals, your history and the right strategy for you.
I have a pretty strict no bullshit policy at The Dermal Lounge.
If I don’t believe a product or treatment can deliver a result, it doesn’t touch your skin — no
matter how fancy the packaging is or how good the marketing sounds.
I’m interested in skin science, measurable progress and treatments that make sense.
Final thoughts
So, if you’ve ever wondered what a dermal therapist actually does, hopefully this gives you a
little more insight.
I’m here to help you understand your skin, not just treat it.
Whether you’re dealing with pigmentation, acne, vascular concerns, unwanted hair, ageing,
texture, compromised skin or you’re simply trying to figure out what the hell your skin
needs, that’s where we start.
We assess.
We educate.
We create a plan.
We treat.
We reassess.
And we adjust.
Because healthy skin isn’t about chasing perfection.
It’s about getting your skin functioning at its best — and creating results that make sense
for you.
Welcome to The Dermal Lounge.
Let’s get started.
